Acupressure Workshop for Use During Labour
Acupressure is a holistic technique that rebalances a person’s energy (Qi) by applying firm pressure with the fingers to acupuncture points on the body. Each acupuncture point has a specific function i.e. relieves pain, calms the mind and its healing power is activated when it is pressed for a few minutes.
It is a very practical therapy that helps in many areas of the childbirth experience by assisting the labour to progress, encouraging the cervix to dilate, moderating the pain of contractions and inducing calmness.
It is very useful during labour because it can be used in conjunction with conventional pain relievers and is suitable for women who are planning a water birth. It has the extra benefit of allowing you the freedom to move around during labour and to maintain a measure of control over the way the labour is proceeding.
Using acupressure during childbirth also enables your birth partner to become actively involved and to have a more practical role in the labour. In the case of most mothers the birth partner will perform the acupressure on the points which need heavy pressure or on the ones that you can’t physically reach such as the lower back points that help the labour to progress and you can press on the ones that are easily accessible.
