Focus on Colds and Flu
At this time of year we are especially vulnerable to getting a cold or flu virus. Working in over-heated offices, taking less exercise, eating less fruit and vegetables and traveling in crowded buses and trains can all increase our susceptibility to illness. So what simple steps can we take to prevent colds and flu?
Wrap up warmly
It is especially important to keep the back of your neck covered. In Chinese medicine, colds and flu are regarded as "invaders" which enter the body through the back of the neck.
Eat a balanced diet.
Make sure you are eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Add garlic and onions to your meals: onions boost your immunity and reduce inflammation while garlic has antiviral, antifungal and antiseptic properties.
Drink plenty of water.
Living and working in over-heated environments can dry out the nose and throat which makes them more vulnerable to infection.
Take action as soon as you feel an attack of the sniffles!
- Have a soothing hot bath with a few drops of eucalyptus or rosemary essential oil. Eucalyptus is a natural decongestant and rosemary will ease aching muscles.
- Rub a few drops of olbus oil along the midline of the back of your neck – rub up and down rapidly for a few seconds until a sensation of heat is created. If you have a cough or a sore throat you can do this also on those areas to decongest them.
- Eat less then usual and use simple liquid based foods e.g. vegetables soups, herbal teas and traditional remedies such as this effective one : mix a squeeze of lemon, a slice of fresh ginger and a teaspoon of honey into a mug of boiling water. Allow to infuse for 2 – 3 minutes before drinking.
- Avoid dairy products, very sweet or salty foods for the duration of the illness.
- Over the counter medicines such as Disprin can be helpful to bring down a temperature and relieve muscular pains and headaches.
- Clear a blocked nose and stuffed up head by putting a few drops of olbus or eucalyptus oil into a steaming bowl of water. Place a towel over your head and inhale deeply!!
